4worldlovers: Due to high use of the active area, Gilbert Parks and Recreation will preform maintenance rotation of the West and East Active areas. For the safety of the dogs and their owners, we will be repairing holes, wash outs, improving turf, and making any other repairs as needed.

The repair process will rotate, but one side will remain open at all times. For example, when the West area is open the East area will be closed. After the repairs are completed on the East area, this portion will reopen and the West area will then be closed for maintenance.

Enter at your own risk. Dog owners are liable for any injuries or damage.

Dogs may run "off leash" only in fenced areas. They must be leashed prior to entering and upon leaving the fenced area.

Dog owners must be in attendance with his/her dog and carry a leash at all times.

Dogs showing aggressive behavior must be removed from the area immediately.

Dog treats and food are not allowed in the fenced area.

All dog owners who fail to comply with the above rules may be asked to leave, or be cited if appropriate. Help us keep the Off-Leash Area safe and clean!

The Town of Gilbert, its officers, employees and agents shall not be responsible for any accident, injury and/or loss of property or damage resulting from use of the park by any individual, group or organization.

Park rules are posted at the entrance and designated locations within the park.

Cosmo Dog Park is a special oasis that has captured and celebrated the unique bond between dogs and humans. Every aspect of the story centers around our most famous K9, a local hero named Cosmo who was our first police dog. The park is not only named after Cosmo, but it is inspired by her, our K9 team, and the kinship we have in Gilbert with our dogs of all shapes and sizes. Cosmo’s story of love and dedication is repeated every day in every household with a dog in the family. Every child who visits the park learns from her presence throughout the park, and a plaque in her honor, the important lessons of bravery and loyalty to help them develop strong character.

As you walk along the main path toward the active dog area, a brick memorial was created that acts as a special place for residents who have lost furry family members to reflect. About 1,400 bricks were originally installed. Purchased as an outpouring of residents expressing messages of love and memories for their dogs – dogs who had passed, those whom residents had grown up with, and those who continue to brighten our lives.

4worldlovers: Mitchell Park was once part of the vibrant Mitchell School campus. When the Tempe Elementary School District closed Mitchell School along with Ward and Rural schools in the 1980s, the City moved to acquire the school for both a park site and future building use.

The park and school bear the name of one of Tempe’s most prominent citizens, William W. Mitchell. William Mitchell is the grandfather of Harry Mitchell and great-grandfather of current Mayor Mark Mitchell. William Mitchell was born in Johnson County, Illinois in 1880. He grew up in the area and later became a school teacher in the county. Looking for adventure, he moved to Mesa, Arizona where he oversaw the publication of a local newspaper.

Always possessing a soft heart for education, he donated land he owned to the Mesa Public Schools for Booker T. Washington School. In addition, he was instrumental in having the University of Arizona develop their experimental farm Mesa.

Shortly after WWII, William began a residential development for veterans and others moving to the state. The development was located in west Tempe between University (old 8th Street) and 11th Street in what is referred to today as the Mitchell Park East and West neighborhoods. While Mitchell donated the land for the school, the school district decided to conduct a vote for the school’s name. The Tempe community voted overwhelmingly to name the school in honor of William.

As a long-time Tempe resident and pioneer, William represented the community in the state legislature for 7 terms. He also was an active businessman, newspaper publisher, farmer and land developer. We are fortunate to have citizens like William precede us in the community. Through his civic involvement and philanthropy Tempe is a better community. His legacy will long be remembered and Mitchell Park shall honor his contributions to our community for many years to come.

4worldlovers: These guidelines will help to ensure that your dog parks stay clean and safe.

Please use the mutt mitt dispensers and waste containers located at the parks' fence lines. Owners/custodians must clean up after their dog(s) to decrease the spread of disease.

Dogs must be kept on a leash until the owners/custodian and dog(s) are in the dog park and the entrance gates are fully closed after entry. Outside of gated dog parks, the Phoenix Leash Law applies at all times and in all places.

Owners/custodians must maintain voice control over their dog(s) and keep them in sight while visiting the dog park.

Dog behavior can be unpredictable around other dogs and strangers. For the safety of all the dogs at the parks, immediately leash your dog if it exhibits aggressive behavior and leave the dog park area.

To help keep the dog parks clean, please do not groom animals at the park.

Maricopa County requires that all dogs in the county be licensed. In addition to being licensed, dogs must be older than 4 months and be currently vaccinated.

To discourage aggressive behavior, the city of Phoenix recommends that dog owners only bring animals that have been spayed or neutered.

Absolutely no female dogs in heat are allowed into exercise areas.

Smoking, alcoholic beverages, and food are not permitted within the fenced areas.

Some dogs exhibit unpredictable behavior around small children. For the safety of children please do not bring children under the age of 12 into the dog parks.

Owners/custodians of a dog are responsible for the acts and conduct of their animal at all times when it is in a city park.
