I recently talked in a sermon about John Chapman. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s understandable. Here’s just a bit of his story: John Chapman was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of the Eastern Midwestern states. He worked hard at spreading apple seeds everywhere he went. He helped to build nurseries, he recruited neighbors to care for the nurseries, doing the same thing in multiple places, and then going back from time to time to check on the nurseries and the caregivers he had organized. As he traveled, everywhere he went, he would also joyfully share stories about the good news of Jesus Christ to children and adults alike (Wikipedia). John


Well, there’s another name that needs more attention, especially during our record setting days of summer 2023. Willis Carrier, was an American engineer, best known for inventing modern air conditioning. It was on a foggy Pittsburgh train platform in 1902 when Carrier stared through the mist and realized that he could dry air by passing it through water to create fog. Doing so would make it possible to manufacture air with specific amounts of moisture in it. Within a year, he completed his invention to control humidity—the fundamental building block for modern air condition (Wikipedia).

And here’s one more important name. Around 1938, Frederick Jones began designing the Thermo-Control Model A automatic truck refrigeration unit. Jones designed the portable air-cooling unit for trucks carrying perishable food to prevent spoilage. Plus, portable cooling units designed by Jones were especially important during World War II; preserving blood, medicine, and food for use at army hospitals and on the open battlefields. Following the war, the units became available for commercial use and eventually portable A/C units at home were possible (Wikipedia).

The renown biographer, David McCullough once said that there is so much history yet to be discovered. I am fascinated by this thought. I like to think about those who have, or who do, quietly go about their work all the while making a positive impact. Thank God for the creative blessing so many embrace using their gifts for the benefit of others and for creation, whether we know them by name or not.
