Alexandra (Ali) Vanatta, MD, was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her father — an interventional cardiologist who set the bar high for his daughter by his own example.

A graduate of the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Dr. Vanatta completed her residency at Phoenix Children’s. She is grateful to be part of a caring team at Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics – Scottsdale, where she works closely with pediatric specialists who offer advanced care for children and adolescents with chronic or serious illnesses.

“I have a passion for working with children with complex medical conditions, and I love that Phoenix Children’s is a medical home for many of them,” she says.

Outside of work, Dr. Vanatta enjoys being the fun aunt to a niece and nephew who “light up my world.” An avid runner, cyclist, swimmer and hiker, she also spends many hours training for the Ironman Triathlon.

Lara Hoover, MD, is a pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics who provides comprehensive care for patients from birth through adolescence. Dr. Hoover has a special interest in childhood nutrition and obesity prevention and dermatologic conditions.

Dr. Hoover appreciates the warm and welcoming culture at Phoenix Children's Pediatrics. She also enjoys working collaboratively with Phoenix Children’s specialists to help meet each patient’s unique needs.

After finishing her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, Dr. Hoover earned her medical degree from the University of Queensland Ochsner Medical Program, which provides pre-clinical studies in Brisbane, Australia and clinical work in New Orleans. She completed her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Chicago in Chicago. Dr. Hoover is board certified in general pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Women’s Medical Association.

Dr. Hoover was born with a passion for medicine and helping others. In high school, she sought opportunities to shadow physicians and knew she wanted the same fulfilling career. After completing a medical mission trip with her childhood pediatrician, she realized the positive impact that serving others can have. Dr. Hoover was also greatly inspired by the enthusiastic providers she worked with during medical school and her training.

Dr. Hoover provides her patients and their families with a calm and nurturing environment. She encourages a team approach to care and strives to always listen to each patient’s needs. She works to address concerns and believes that honesty paves the way to informed decisions. She enjoys the relationships she develops with her patients and their families. Her goal is to provide compassionate care from infancy through adolescence.

A native of Texas, Dr. Hoover believes that her global education and experiences with people from around the world give her a unique perspective on how to interact with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

When not treating patients, you can find Dr. Hoover at a farmer's market, spending time outdoors, going to shows or spoiling her puppy. She enjoys staying active, traveling and working on her home improvement skills.

Growing up, Lisa M. Pepka, MD, had an up-close look at the life of a hardworking pediatrician, thanks to her dad. She also helped care for her grandmother, who had cancer. Going with her grandmother to doctor visits “inspired me to go into medicine,” Dr. Pepka says.

Dr. Pepka is an Arizona native. She attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed her residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.

The collaborative spirit among providers drew Dr. Pepka to Phoenix Children’s. “I wanted to work in a place that puts kids first,” she says.

You and your children have amazed me, challenged me, brought me great joy, and taught me so much. After much consideration, I have decided it is time to slow down and will no longer be working full-time for Scottsdale Children's Group and Arbor Medical Partners. Starting mid-September, I will be working just a few days a month at various Arbor locations and will not have a set schedule. With a lighter load, I will be able to concentrate on some other things, including visiting my adult children (who live all over the country), working on a hundred projects that I have never finished, and traveling with my husband. Kara Decker is a certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She received both her Bachelors in nursing and Doctor in Nursing Practice with a focus in pediatric primary care from the University of Missouri. Kara’s nursing experience comes from caring for families and infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As a Phoenix native, she enjoys hiking and walks with her husband, new baby, and dogs - Winston & Wrigley.

Dustin Graduated with his Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Arizona State University in May 2013.
