The Friends of the Surprise Libraries Inc is a non-profit, independent organization. The group supports literacy and programs at the Surprise Regional Library, Hollyhock Library, Asante Library and local schools.


BOOK DONATIONS from community members are an important aspect of fundraising for Friends. Bring donations into the Surprise Regional Library. A special table in the Friends Place bookstore is dedicated to donations. Donation receipts are available from the Volunteer on duty.

Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County (LVMC) is a community-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Phoenix, Arizona dedicated to improving adult reading, writing, and mathematical skills, and preparing for the GED to attain a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. Additionally, LVMC offers English language classes that include civics and citizenship lessons.

LVMC has been one of the Arizona Department of Education / Adult Education Services (ADE/AES) program providing Adult Basic and Secondary Education and English Acquisition for Adults for more than 20 years.

Registration and classes are free! Our programs focus on basic education, GED preparation, and English Language Acquisition.

Our Learning Centers offer flexible, self-paced, blended-learning programs including face-to-face classes, computer-based instruction, remote classes and tutoring. Our adult education certified instructors complement classroom instruction with learning software to advance -at a faster pace- the student’s reading ability, GED preparation and English language acquisition. LVMC also offers college and career readiness workshops and training opportunities. LVMC curriculum is aligned and in compliance with the Arizona Department of Education / Adult Education Services requirements.

In 1982 the population of Maricopa County was about 900,000. Currently, the population is over 2.8 million. According to recent estimates, there are more than 500,000 adults in Maricopa County who are “functionally illiterate.” These individuals are unable to keep pace in our complex society and in today’s highly technical workplace.
