Grant Helps Church Get ‘Techie’ Tech camps educate and equip refugees


Desert Garden United Church of Christ might not be in the epicenter of the refugee crisis, but that hasn’t stopped the Sun City West, Arizona, congregation from doing its part to help its neighbors. John Riddle, the church’s chair of mission outreach, describes Desert Garden as a retirement community, but these seniors aren’t behind the times. If anything, they are tech savvy. Well, they are aware of the importance of refugees having access to computers for education, thus, their request for a $2,000 grant from Global H.O.P.E. to partner with AZStRUT, Arizona Students Recycling Used Technology.

AZStRUT is a nonprofit seeking to keep old computers from being tossed into landfills. Among the many programs is what is called “techie camps,” where middle and high school student get to deconstruct and reconstruct a computer. At the end of camp, each student goes home with a refurbished computer. “The teens having their laptop is important as we were hearing many were using their phones for classwork,” said Riddle.

Desert Garden UCC church has expanded their techie camps to include adults in addition to teens. As Riddle says, having a computer is vital to help these families in job searching as well as education. Desert Garden UCC hosted 27 participants at its most recent techie camp. The church hopes to hold two more techie camps by the end of the year.

Every month for years Desert Garden has collected food and cash donations for the Valley View Food Bank. When the pandemic hit, and food vulnerability became a crisis for many, we simply made the collections ongoing. During the pandemic we brought food in any time, and a lot of food was collected during the week. Now, we would like to have the first Sunday of each month be the Food Bank giving Sunday, of course if you do want to bring donations in during the week that will be okay.

These offerings are over-and-above regular giving and our budget. And of course this is in addition to donations you make directly to the food banks plus all of the gleaned citrus that went to St. Mary’s Food Bank. When we say that your generosity makes a difference… we mean it! Thank you.
