4worldlovers: Started in Arizona, Michael’s Restorations and the Martell family have been in the furniture/wood restoration business for over 55 years. Michael’s Restorations was originally opened by Michael Martell Sr. in the early 1980’s.

Mike had a passion for restorations and worked and trained under his brother, Tim for over a decade until he started his own company in 1982. The name, although not incredibly creative, was an obvious choice-Michael’s Restorations. Mike’s company, at the time handled moving damage claims, insurance claims and private work. His claim work included local celebrities, prominent business members and then senator DeConcini. Mike’s passion for restoration and his incredible work ethic far exceeded his health and business acumen and Michael’s was forced to close in the 1980’s and would not return for nearly 15 years

Mike’s second son, Matthew, worked with his father as a young boy and spent summers helping strip and sand furniture and learn basic repairs to help earn money for his passion-dirt bikes. This part time summer work did not immediately turn into an obvious career path for Matthew but, in time it would present itself as an opportunity that once seized, would turn into a new life and a second chance for the company his talented father had started over 15 years prior.

Matthew gave a new life to Michael’s Restorations in 1994. He worked with his father, Michael, and was trained in the restoration techniques that had been passed to Michael. Matt started with handling the restoration work but, quickly took over the entire operation handling all aspects of the business. Matt’s father remained with the company and took a shop manager and extremely supportive father and mentor role. Mike would remain a valuable asset and source of information for Matt and the company until his passing in 2016. His legacy lives on in every repair completed by the technicians who are trained in the techniques passed on to Matt.

From modest beginnings which included claims almost exclusively in Tucson, Arizona, and a workshop located inside his two bedroom apartment, Matt has steadily grown the company to include the entire state of Arizona, all of Southern California, and Colorado Springs. Future locations are coming soon so stay tuned.
