In the last 40 years the Department of Economics at Arizona State University has become well known for its contributions to various fields of economics, including environmental economics, applied microeconomics, macroeconomics, public finance, labor economics, economics of education, and economic theory.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of two colleagues. Our deepest condolences go to their family and friends.

Edward C. Prescott was one of the most influential economists in the world, a Nobel Prize winner, and a beloved and respected member of the W. P. Carey community for 20 years.

Berthold Herrendorf joined the Department of Economics in 2003. We deeply appreciate and miss his many contributions as an outstanding teacher, researcher, and colleague.

The department offers a rigorous STEM-designated PhD program that produces well-trained economists. ASU Economics PhD graduates obtain jobs in colleges and academic institutions in the U.S. and around the world, in government, and in industry. STEM designation gives eligible graduates on student visas access to an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 36 months.

Our undergraduate program offers Bachelor of Science degrees through the W. P. Carey School of Business and through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It also offers interdisciplinary degrees with the School of Politics and Global Studies and the Fulton School of Engineering. Interdisciplinary opportunities allow students to tailor their economics degree to their particular interests.

Undergraduate economics students receive comprehensive career support, advising, and tutoring throughout their time at ASU.

All W. P. Carey students receive dedicated career support through the W. P. Carey Career Services Center. In addition, the Department of Economics has created resources to help students navigate what’s next. Our graduates go on to work in many different industries and in many different roles. The mission of the Center for the Advanced Study in Economic Efficiency is to advance economics to better address issues and achieve greater economic efficiency.

Explicitly recognizing that all economic behavior takes place within an environmental system, the mission of the Center for Environmental Economics and Sustainability Policy is to develop principles for environmental and resource economics that can help to guide sustainability policy.

Many researchers from around the world visit the W. P. Carey Department of Economics to present their work at regular seminars and conferences. All of this translates into high quality instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Bringing together unique skill sets, the department focuses on sustainable development, preservation of life safety, private property maintenance, neighborhood engagement, urban open space planning, historic preservation and job attraction.
