The Palisades Ranger Residence Cabin is located within the Palisades Administrative Site in the Santa Catalina Mountains, 20 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona. It is reached via the Sky Island Scenic Byway, a historic, scenic, and ecological drive from the Sonoran Desert to the dense forests at 8,000 feet elevation. The house has indoor plumbing, electricity, a fully equipped kitchen, furniture, beds and a large enclosed front yard.
Open year-round. Access due to inclement weather is subject to impact the open season. Check in: after 2:00 pm Check out: before 12:00 pm
From northeast Tucson: take E. Tanque Verde Road to E. Catalina Highway. Drive north on Catalina Highway, which becomes the General Hitchcock Highway, for approximately 23 miles to Organization Ridge Road and take a left (just before Palisades Visitor Center). Cabin is located approximately 100 yards in on the right.
The cabin lies in a mountain range or "sky island" in the Coronado National Forest, rising dramatically from the desert floor, supporting abundant and biologically diverse plant and animal communities. From the desert floor to the upper slopes of Mt. Lemmon, life zones vary from Sonoran desert to subalpine forest, with wildlife communities that are equally diverse. An extensive trail network offers opportunities for day and extended trips, with easy access to nearby Pusch Ridge Wilderness.
The Palisades Ranger Residence Cabin is approximately one hour from Tucson, Arizona, and provides terrific access to a myriad of recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, birding, horseback riding, picnicking, sightseeing, and visiting historic areas.
Fishing and boating are available at nearby Rose Canyon Lake, as are opportunities for rock-climbing and mountain biking. Winter sports are available at higher elevations; Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley in the Santa Catalina Mountains is the southernmost ski area in the United States.
The five room cabin can accommodate up to four people. It consists of a bedroom (with a bunk bed), a dining room, a living room (with a queen size futon), a bathroom, and a fully-equipped kitchen. Features include:
Although the cabin has amenities for comfortable lodging, guests do need to provide some of their own supplies, including food, sleeping bags, linens, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags. Although electricity is available, it is recommended that guests bring an additional light source in case of emergencies.
