4worldlovers: The first phase of improvements to the Kino South Complex expansion has added 167 acres to the facility’s existing footprint, increasing the overall area of Kino Sports Complex to more than 300 acres. With this expansion, Kino has surpassed the current major facilities in the Phoenix metropolitan area, making it a prime destination for regional and national tournament sporting events.

The expansion at Kino Sports Complex was an economic goal identified in the County’s 2012-2014 Economic Development Plan, which included the diversification of sports attractions by encouraging soccer as an emerging attraction sport. The acreage south of Interstate 10, now the Kino South Complex expansion, was purchased in 2014. The Kino Stadium District has funded the first phase of improvements, including 12 long-fields, the pickleball facility and other amenities. These initial improvements are the foundation for the South Complex. Future developments call for public private partnerships to build other amenities, such as a stadium, indoor court facility or other outdoor recreational uses and sports-related private hospitality support services such as hotels, restaurants and retail components.

The first phase of improvements includes 12 lighted natural grass, sand-based long fields suitable for rugby, football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and a variety of other activities and events.

The sporting facilities will share a central promenade area with picnic style seating, concessions, locker rooms, ticket office and other services available for use by both large and small events.

The South Complex includes free paved parking for close to 800 vehicles. The main lot to the south of the fields has 744 spots and the auxiliary lot close to Interstate 10 has 40 spots. Overflow parking will also be available as needed.

Conveniently located near Interstate-10 and Interstate-19, and in close proximity to the Tucson International Airport, the South Complex provides easy access to residents and visitors alike. The entrance to the facility is located on Benson Highway, just east of Campbell Avenue. There’s also access to the site via the Chuck Huckelberry Loop along the Julian Wash for those traveling on foot or bicycle. In the coming years, several Arizona Department of Transportation interchange improvements will further increase the ease of access to the site.
